Coming to KO as a junior is a difficult transition, but now senior Maysarah Javed looks towards knowledge and learning for ways to meet new people.
Usually, journalism is a prerequisite for joining the KO News, but Maysarah already had some experience, being on the paper at her old school. So Maysarah met with English teacher and KO News advisor Cathy Schieffelin and was able to join the KO News as an Associate Opinions and Reviews Editor without journalism.
This involvement required Maysarah to give up her Sunday mornings once a month and come into school to work. While that poses some challenges for the average teenager, Maysarah enjoyed her time spent writing and working with her peers.
Even before joining the news at her old school, the concept of learning about current events and a general understanding of the world through newspapers is something Maysarah grew up with. “I grew up in a very, very knowledge-striving family,” Maysarah said. “There always would be the morning newspaper at home, and my grandpa would go on and on about what was happening current events-wise. So I guess that exposure kind of led me to journalism in a way. And I guess I’ve never let go ever since.”
Maysarah really enjoyed soaking in the last few moments on the KO News as a senior and wrapping up her high school experience with her fellow classmates. “So I actually really enjoyed the last few months I spent on the staff,” Maysarah said. “As a senior, it was a very heartwarming few months where I could write and wrap up on things and see how the next staff will take this newspaper to the next level.”
We wish Maysarah the best of luck on her college journey, and the KO News is grateful for all the time and effort she’s put into the paper. The KO News will miss her greatly.
