Boys soccer marches on

The boys varsity soccer team has started its season with a 1-5-1 record, but the resilient group of boys will not let this define their finish.

After weeks of hard work during the long, hot days of preseason, the Wyverns opened their 2025 campaign against a strong Hotchkiss team on Wednesday, Sept. 9. However, they were outmatched from the beginning, and they fell 6-0.

The boys then hosted their first home game of the season against St. Luke’s on Saturday, Sept. 13. With key saves from junior goalie Daniel Rivera and goals from senior striker Corey Nguyen and freshman striker Jooyeol Baek, the Wyverns secured a 2-1 victory.

On Monday, Sept. 15, under the bright lights at Loomis Chaffee, the Wyvern defense was no match for  New England’s best, falling 4-0.

In practice, Head Coach Richard Shaw emphasizes the fundamentals of the game, applied with intensity and communication. He also reinforces proper conditioning, which he believes will strengthen the team’s endurance later in the season during crucial matchups.

“In practice we have really started to build a strong bond, which is so important early in the season,” senior midfielder Tadgh Dillow said. While the Wyverns dropped tough games, their practice and conditioning would pay off soon.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the boys battled Canterbury. The Saints jumped ahead in the 20th minute, but the Wyverns pressed on. Earning a key kick, Nguyen played the ball into the box, where senior striker Captain Pratt Blair reacted quickly to tie the game at 1-1.

After a defensive miscommunication in the 75th minute put them down 2-1, Blair again came through. Driving into the box, he drew a foul, earning a penalty kick. His shot sailed past the keeper, leveling the score at 2-2.

During the final 15 minutes, the Wyverns dominated possession but could not convert chances, resulting in a 2-2 tie.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, the boys traveled to Greens Farms Academy. In a tight game, the Wyverns could not generate much offense and fell 2-0.

Most recently, on Saturday, Sept. 27, they faced Trinity-Pawling in a nail-biter. With back-and-forth chances on both sides, the Wyverns were edged out in the final minutes, falling 2-1.

Looking ahead, the boys will face Westminster on Saturday, Oct. 4, followed by Kent on Oct. 8 and Pomfret on Oct. 11.
