The girls varsity soccer team had a tough season, but despite facing difficult opponents they are still persevering through their last few games.

On Oct. 29, the girls had an away game facing Hopkins, another challenging opponent. The girls got off to a strong start with junior Catherine Daniels breaking free from the defense, and placing the ball in the corner of the net to get an early lead 1-0. Hopkins responded quickly with a header off of a cross, and then scored off a poor clearance. Despite being down, the girls worked very hard, putting in great effort until the last minute, leaving with a score of 5-1.

On Oct. 26, the girls competed home against Hotchkiss. According to Assistant Coach Kathryn McCarthy, throughout the first half, the team held a strong defense led by senior Captain Jamie Scarpantonio. Unfortunately, by the end of the half, the opposing team scored making the score 1-0. In the second half, the girls did not give up, putting 100% effort until the end of the game. Goalie Jill Wells kept the girls in the game. “Jill had one of her best games against Hotchkiss, making several important saves and directing the defense throughout the game,” Daniels said. Despite losing 2-0, the girls played a great game of soccer.

In the team’s second to last game of the season, the girls played away against Berkshire. In the first half, Scarpantonio was dribbling up the field with pace, and she scored a great strike from outside the eighteen. Despite having a great goal, Berkshire was a challenging opponent who they lost to with a final score 3-1.

“The girls continue to fight despite having a challenging opponent,” Coach McCarthy said. “The girls continue to show up and have a willingness to try hard.” Coach McCarthy described how the team never gave up, even when they were losing, which really benefited the team. “We need to work on having a better connection through the midfield and forwards in order to put the ball in the back of the net,” Coach McCarthy said.

Coach McCarthy is already looking towards having a great season next year.
