Ice hockey pushes on despite COVID-19 restrictions

In the Middle

As Hockey Coach John Hissick and Assistant coach Matt Wolf lead the practices at Cromwell Champion ice rink, the team is eager to play some games.

The team drives out to Cromwell on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to practice, and the team has virtual workouts on Monday and Wednesday run by Coach Wolf.

“The rink we practice at is in Cromwell about 25 minutes away,” eighth-grader Patrick O’Shaughnessy explains about the drive. “So after school, we drive there.”

Once at the rink, players must come in with half their pads on, ready to get their skates on, and get out there.

Middle schoolers are allowed to practice with the high school team for this year. Seventh-grader Wade Crowther talks about playing with the big kids, “It’s a big step up, a big challenge getting used to them and playing at the next level.”

Interim Director of Athletics Josh Balabuch talks about getting on and off the ice, “We are limited to the amount of time we are able to be at the rink before and after practices start and games as well.”

Skating with a mask on is a struggle for the players but it’s much better than no hockey. Speaking on the required mask-wearing, Wade said, “While you’re on the ice you really want to take it off.”

With games being allowed the team gears up for the future. Students and coaches both  feel grateful for the opportunities this season has allowed despite the limitations and look forward to next season.
